Light Physical ActivityWe all know that participating in light physical activity is good for our health, but did you know it could help you sleep?!

Activities such as running, biking, weightlifting, yoga, and even gardening are associated with better sleep habits compared to no physical activity, the University of Pennsylvania research found.

However, other types of light physical activity like childcare and housework are associated with worse sleep habits. Of course, it’s possible that this may be due to the fact that parents are more likely to engage in these activities and may experience worse sleep for other reasons, but researchers did not draw a connection.

They found that every type of physical activity, with the exception of childcare and housework, was more highly correlated with sufficient sleep than a lack of physical activity. Even light physical activity like walking and gardening was enough to make a difference.

Light Physical Activity, such as light walking, showed some benefit with more benefit displayed with purposeful activity such as yoga or running.

Light physical activity may not have an immediate impact on sleep, but keep trying! There are various other reasons that sleep cannot be of quality duration and depth.

If you are having trouble sleeping at night, our doctors may recommend a simple salvia test that could see if your cortisol levels are keeping you up in the middle of the night. This test can measure your body’s response to stress. If you are like many Americans and are stuck in a cycle of stress, you could be suffering from adrenal dysfunction or adrenal “burnout”. This can take a toll on your overall health, affect your relationships and quality of life, and should be taken very seriously.
